KAHAL Staff City Contact: Joey, Joey@KahalAbroad.org

One of the most fascinating, and often overlooked stories of survival and perseverance during the Holocaust is that of the Jewish refugees in Shanghai. In addition to a government-operated museum chronicling their journey, there are popular Jewish history tours and other cultural centers dedicated to their struggle. Modern Shanghai is home to around 3,000 Jews, many of whom are young professional expats. Kosher food is available only through Chabad, which has three centers across the city. Kehilat Shanghai, a Progressive (Reform) community has lots of programming for students and young professionals. Despite its small size, Shanghai’s Jewish population is extremely welcoming of foreign students and encourages their active involvement and leadership.
